"NEW" a photo challenge: Week #1

Happy "NEW" Year---Sunrise-1.1.15
Happy New Year!! a day late.

Here in Hawaii it's a tradition to light up the sky with fireworks. Since we live in a tropical environment that means that nearly everyone is outside and blowing up stuff on New Year's Eve, unlike Nebraska where it's too dang cold to blow stuff up on New Years Eve. In this household we close up the house, turn on fans, the TV and  the stereo to drown out the noise, because the Girlz are extremely afraid of the big bangs. This is due partially to our life on Molokai a few years ago. Over there someone must have had a connection with some military type explosives and of course those peeps lived near us and let them explode all night long. The Girlz were never "gun shy" until then.

I worked New Years Eve and arrived home at 6p.m. to find the Girlz already huddled up in the house with Ron. To me, New Year's Eve is a night of pure torture for our animal friends. My heart goes out to those that don't have a place to hide or get away from the chaos.
As the night progressed we listened to praise and worship music (loudly) while watching football games. I lay under the covers trying to comfort two dogs that are insisting that they also needed to be under the covers with me. I am sure if Gracie could have burrowed her way under my skin she would have.
Tick, tick, tick....
11:45 p.m. the booms got more intense and frequent. I thought to myself only a little longer and this will all be over....midnight, a plethora of explosions and then the house feel silent...We lost power!! The entire island was silent...except for the fireworks that continued well into the wee hours of the morning. We no longer had the sound buffer and now my Gracie was beside herself, burrowing in her bedding, she could get close enough, Schatzie across the room panting. When would this end??

Finally at 1:23a.m. I put Gracie in a full body hold and she collapsed in my arms, exhausted from the noise. She had had enough. The house was still silent as we all tried to finally sleep.
I had to work on New Years Day so our  morning walk was cut short but, we walked by all sorts of remnants of the previous nights activity.  I wondered where all the party animals were now....they sure had a mess to clean up, while the Girlz and I delighted in the sunrise of the New Year.
What a mess and huge waste of money (IMO)

we hate things that go boom!
As you see in this post title, I have joined up with the good folks at

  1. New Years, Halloween and the Fourth of July (for those who live in the US) are all difficult days for our four legged friends...
One of our dogs is absolutely terrified of loud booming noises, poor thing. And the other dog doesn't even notice...

  3. Love the photos, you live in a beautiful part of the world. We agree about the fireworks, surely with the world's problems today, the money could be better spent. Happy New Year!

  4. Our night was pretty much the same, although we had the benefit of some drugs to give Monty. He was still a wreck though. We had a repeat performance the day after. Sigh..

  5. So glad you are doing this challenge too, it is going to be so fun! Not much happening here with fireworks in the winter, but in the summer it makes such a mess with all the "leftovers" lying around. Luckily, we don't mind the noise, but it keeps Mom up.

  6. Even here in the cold North there were some fireworks this year. Hailey did pretty good this year as there wasn't too many. I hate when people leave the garbage from those things around. Happy Saturday.

  7. oh your poor babies.. we only get a few because they are illegal here, but they are only from 11:30 until 12:30 and not big bangs, but firecrackers and a few rockets... and you could not leave town because it is an island.

  9. Hi Val, All of our other dogs have always been terrified of fireworks and thunder, but thankfully Hunter isnt'. I used to give our pups Benedryl to get them to sleep, but now they have vests that are compression vests that help dogs. Don't know whether you've ever heard of these, but they were first used with Austic children and they work.
Glad the partying is over for your girls. I so well remember how terrified our pups got-not fun at all.
    Sending you hugs.

  11. I feel sorry for the girlz. We have a rescue that is very afraid of the loud noises like fireworks and thunder and when she gets scared you think she's going to shake herself into a heart attack. Thankfully for you and the girlz the night of revelry is over and life will get back to normal.

Hopefully someone will come along and clean up the mess from that night too!

  12. It was rainy here so we weren't inundated with fireworks, but enough to cause distress. It finally was quite and we hit the bed at 3:00. At 3:15, they started random explosions. UGH! We turned on the radio to drown it out and it finally stopped an hour later.

  13. Only fireworks we see are the ones from New York’s Central Park and it’s far enough away not to here it too.

  14. Money up in smoke! Me and Stanley are not bothered by fireworks but out predecessors were terrified. We wish there never was any fireworks cuz mom says people just act crazy.

  15. Ugh, that doesn't sound like a fun way to ring in the new year. Poor girlz! And to lose power and your noise buffer on top of it all! Luckily things were quiet here. There were a few big fireworks, but Rita is used to those since we hear the SeaWorld fireworks every night in the summer (again... what a waste of money and a big mess!).

  16. That is a gorgeous photo of a new (quieter) day. I am thankful that New Years Eve here is not nearly the huge time and money waste on fire works that the 4th of July is. It would be safer to go crazy on the explosives during the wetter season, though! Here's wishing you more peace and quiet for the rest of the year! Nice to have "met" you through the photo challenge and I look forward to visiting your blog more!

  17. Hi there did I read Nebraska, are you from there? My mom's family is so we'd love to hear where you're from. I hate fireworks, thanks goodness for the cold because no one stayed out long here on new years. Otherwise its the Thundershirt. Love Dolly

  18. Your poor Girlz. They were so lucky you were there to comfort them. I agree that it is a huge waste of money. Thankfully, my Delia isn't bothered by the noise, but I work at a doggy daycare and most of them are not fans.

  19. I'm so sorry for your girlz having to go through that. And when the power went out, your heart must have sunk... Then to find all that garbage the next morning. Grrrrr.

I hope that the rest of 2015 is far happier than the start for all four of you!
