Not what we thought...

The night before last I was stirred out of a deep sleep and the voice in my head was telling me that we needed to take Schatzie to the vet. Something was telling me it wasn't just her hip dysplasia, it was more.  I could hardly wait until the vet office opened to make an appointment. We arrived at 10 for news I wasn't expecting.  After a thorough examine by Dr. Pat, he announced, "she's got a torn ACL". My heart melted, as I now know how she had got the injury. 10 days ago we had a brief rain shower and Schatzie was running up our stairs,(like normal) slipped and caught her leg in the open staircase. She whimpered but other than that showed no signs of injury until the major limp 5 days ago.
We have opted to do surgery and I will explain more about that at another time. So next Tuesday, Schatzie will have surgery to repair her injured ACL. We have chosen to do the least invasive surgery and Dr. Pat feels that we will have good results.
My head is spinning in trying to figure out how in the world I am going to keep this very active and extremely attentive German Shepherd calm and quiet for the next few months.
This is going to be interesting...

Stay tuned.  :/

  2. We would have the same thoughts about the recovery time. This will be challenging. But we are sure glad you found out what it was and can get it fixed! Seems a lot of dogs have had this type of surgery so hopefully you will get some good tips and advice!

  6. Thank goodness for modern veterinary medicine, not so many years ago an operation like this wouldn't have been available! Hope the procedure goes well and wish a speedy recovery for Schatzie.

  10. Hang in there... I'm sure that the surgery will go well, and you'll figure out how to keep her quiet. We have some tricks from R's surgery recoveries (like feeding all his daily food in frozen giant kongs and playing sedentary brain games). I feel confident that it will go well!

Now you have me a tiny bit worried. Shyla took a mis-step today, and for almost the first time in her life, it slowed her down a bit. It looked to be a hind limb that hurt but, aside from going slow for a little while, she seemed ok by later in the day. Your story has told me to keep a really good eye on her.

  11. Our thoughts are with you. We have Bill with a slight tear in his ACL but some weird bone stuff going on so for now that is our focus, not the ACL. Good luck with the surgery, we'll be anxiously awaiting an update! (get the crate ready...)
