For the last week or so my hummingbird and oriole feeders and 1 birdbath(one without the fountain) have been just a buzz. Anyone have any idea what kind of bees these might be?? They are not at all aggressive, just seem to be happy sucking on the nectar that is in the feeders. I don't really mind since we are in such a drought I am sure the little guys need water.Interesting though, these feeders sit right in the middle of my flower garden and the bees don't go anywhere near the flowers. I'm just hoping they are not a "bad" kind of bee. Anyone else experiencing this problem??
yup, we've got a few here too. they compete w/ the hummingbirds for the feeders. so far not quite as thick as yours.
ReplyDeleteThey appear to be worker honey bees.
ReplyDeleteI would say they are wasps, and with that many on the feeder I'd say you have a nest somewhere close by. They don't sting like a bee - they bite and it can be very painful. My wasp bite took 3 weeks before it stopped itching. The nest was under our deck; hubby removed it very early one morning but there were a few stragglers which I zapped with spray. Be very careful.
ReplyDeleteHI Val and girls,I think they are worker bees too-they don't look like the wasps here. I would say that they are gathering the sugar to take back to the hive. I know there have been lots of bee hives here suffering so I think it is very thoughtful of you to share-or the hummingbirds to share. I agree with Norma though, Wasp bites hurt and it takes a few days to get over it. I'm glad these don't seem aggressive. I was gardening the other day, trying to pull weeds but there were so many bees that I decided to let them have the nectar from the flowers. Have a wonderful weekend my friend!!!

Scary sight; even if they're gathering supplies!
ReplyDeleteYep I think they are worker bees too. MOM says the are going down in numbers fast so I think it is a good thing you are letting them feed at the feeders.

That's a lot of bees. I don't know what kind of bees they are but I don't think they are wasps as their heads are too fuzzy. :)
ReplyDeleteIt happens to me every year at about this time. I've never had as many bees as you have... but I see the hummers being chased away by bees fairly often. I don't know what kind of bees they are...
ReplyDeletesame thing happened to our hummingbird feeder. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteBees get thirsty too! Richard from Amish Stories. Richard
ReplyDeleteThey are little thief bees stealing the nectar from the hummingbirds! LOL
ReplyDeleteWe have the same problem here although witht he cooler nights we have been having there have been more hummingbirds than bees lately.
